Beirut in Mexico City

Being in the presence of one of your favorite, most influential bands is one thing, making the effort to see them in a different country is , seeing through the eyes of a different language. Being thousands of miles away from home, hundreds of miles from anyone I knew, in a different cultural setting, with people who spoke a different language than my typical friends. On February 19, Beirut put on a 5 man show, introducing many of the songs they had written while in Oaxaca, from the March Of The Zapotec album, along with some from the Realpeople Holland album. Zach Condon, constantly apologizing for not being able to speak spanish solidly, tosted the crowd with "Salud!" Before starting off another song. After 3 encores, Ski Baba, and the Gulag Orchestar, Beirut was off, the crowds lingered outside the Auditorio Nacional Lunario as I caught up with some folks at the Pata Negra to end the night.
